Year 2 Music Compositions

Year 2 Music

In term 2 the students of All Saints' college welcomed the Zephyr String Quartet to the school as part of the Musica Viva in schools program. As preparation  for the concert we listened to some of the works they were to perform. The students in years one and two were very interested the  piece, Esther the Cat, which used lots of unusual techniques to make sounds that a cat might have heard when out exploring at night.  The students used the compositional ideas of a walking bass and unusual sounds to create their own compositions about Bono the Dog. We also looked at the Cuckoo Quartet  by Haydn, and from this we wrote and performed compositions of bird conversations. We then chose one score of each composition to record as a class and to share on the website.

A Bird Trio by Claire

I wanted it to sound like it was proper music. I liked the part that everyone got a go. I liked writing it because it sounded good.

Sound File

Some Year 2 reflections on their own Bird Quartet compositions:

I wanted it to sound like real birds. I liked the part that sounded like real bird music. I liked writing it because I like music.  I liked recording it because it sounded happy.
Anna

I wanted it to sound like real birds in a cage with their friends.  I like the part where I'm a bossy bird.  I liked writing it because I thought it was good.
Tim

I wanted it to sound like birds having a conversation. I liked the part where Tim and I sang a part together. I was amazed by how the singing sounded. It was fun to sing and I liked writing it because it was so much fun.
Simon

I wanted it to sound like real budgies singing a happy song. I liked the part where bird 1 and bird 3 sang together at the start. I liked writing it because I could use my imagination. I liked recording it because I pretended to be a bird.
