On Thursday, September 24th, Year 7 went on an excursion to the Japanese Garden in Cowra under the supervision of Mr Pike, Mrs Jones and Ms Kobayashi.
The Garden commemorates the Japanese and Australian soldiers who died during the Cowra Japanese Prisoner of War breakout in 1944, during World War II.
After arriving at 9.30 am, we assembled at the Bonsho temple bell, which we all had a go at hitting and ringing. Next, we went into the Cultural Centre, a small museum. Here, all kinds of Japanese artieacts, including Japanese wedding and special event kimonos as well as kabutos (Samurai helmets) were on display.

We then split into two groups. One group went to a Japanese tea ceremony at the cultural centre and the others went on a tour of the park. The tea ceremony was interesting and a very traditional event. We were lucky enough to try some traditional Japanese green tea and some traditional sweets.
The tour of the park was lovely, taking about an hour to cover the whole park. Cherry blossoms were everywhere. There was also a waterfall and a lake full of fish divided the park.

Time slipped away and soon it was time for a beautiful lunch was provided by the garden cafe. After that, we were able to freely stroll around until 1.00 pm.

Then we hopped back on the bus and travelled to the cemeteries where the Japanese and Australian soldiers are buried. It was sad to see how many people died and how young some of the people who died in the war were.

The day was a great experience and we learnt a lot about Japanese religion and culture. We would like to thank Mr Pike, Mrs Jones and Ms Kobayashi for making this day so wonderful. It was an excellent experience and we learnt a lot.
