This year has been a sad one for the Old Bathurstians as a number of our well-known members have passed away
Firstly, we lost our longest lived member (100 years of age), Vin Suttor, who passed away peacefully in July. Vin was a well-loved member of the College community. He was heavily involved in the College through the Council, the Foundation and the Old Bathurstians' Union for most of his life.
Michael Emms (OBU - 1958), the son of Albert ('Gadjet') and Marjorie Emms also lost his long battle with illness in July. Michael had recently visited All Saints' for the Memorial Service for his mother who passed away in late 2008. Marjorie was a Marsden 'Old Girl' of the 1930's.
Sandra Barlow (nee Windus; MOG 1961) also recently lost her long battle with illness which had plagued her for most of her life. Despite poor health, Sandra continued to live an active fulfilled life.
Robert ('Pinhead') Wilson (OBU 1958) was tragically killed on September 14thin a motor vehicle accident. Robert had been a Council member and Mayor of Peak Hill and Parkes for nearly 40 years. He had recently retired from Parkes Council but was still heavily involved in both community and Council affairs.
Throughout the year, the Old Bathurstians' Union has had the Dubbo Dinner in March, which was well-attended by a mixed group of ex-students. The Back to Saints' weekend in September was a very successful event with about 120 people celebrating their 10, 20 and 50 year reunions. A five year reunion on the same weekend was also a great celebration.
The new OBU President, James Pirie (OBU 1959), accepted the position for 2009-2010. With James and his committee, the Old Bathurstians' Union can look forward to a productive, successful 2010.
Mrs Memory Sanders
As the newly elected President of the OBU, I take this opportunity to once again offer a warm greeting to all members. It is some 20 years since I held this position so I may be a little slow out of the blocks this time. On behalf of all members of the OBU, I wish to thank David Coote for his contribution to the organisation and we hope that your future endeavours are successful.
The whole OBU family and especially those like myself who attended All Saints' during the 1950s era were deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Robert Wilson. His service to the community over a record period of time made him a legend in his own lifetime. To his wife and family we extend our deepest sympathy.
The recent Bathurst Dinner was a raging success with a large cross-section of age groups who organised gatherings of their respective years - mine being those who left in 1959; it was great meet up with those who I had not seen for 50 years. Our new Head of College, Dr Peter Miller, is keen to promote the College in various areas over the state. At our next committee meeting we will be exploring ways of doing this and to what extent the OBU can be of assistance. This, along with some other projects, will be our main aim for the next 12 months.
As with most organisations like the OBU, we are "always wanting something". Here we go again! No, it is not money, we need people. Most of the committee members are on the wrong side of 65, entering the twilight zone, so for the future health of the OBU we are in dire need of some younger members. Previous committees have left the OBU in good shape and as it is part of the College's fabric we have to have ongoing commitment to maintain and build.
Regards to all,
Jim Pirie
