  • HICES Maths Day

    15 November, 2017

Eight students from Year 7 and Year 8 travelled to Sydney recently to be involved in the HICES Mathematics Day.

They joined more than one hundred other like-minded students from HICES schools at William Clarke College in Kellyville for a day of fun, problem-solving and socialising.

Our students were grouped into two teams:

Team 1 - Fergus Baldwin, Callum Duncan-Keen, Drew Mulligan and James Edwards
Team 2 - Charlotte Russell, Samantha Mitchell, Sophie Porter and Isabella Taylor

A wide variety of mathematical challenges awaited the teams including algebraic expressions, probability, logical reasoning and systematic thinking.

At times the students were also put under the pressure of solving problems in a short period of time, which was a difficult, but extremely worthwhile, activity.

The students were also given opportunities to mingle and work with students from other schools, which was also another highlight of a wonderful day.

Whilst our teams didn’t feature on the podium, they should be very pleased with their effort and success on the day.

I would like to congratulate the students on their effort and exemplary behaviour during the day and I would also like to thank Mr Rob McLean for his assistance in supervising the students and driving the bus.

I hope this can become an annual event for some of our most able mathematicians in Years 7 and 8.

    Mr Phillip Cant
Head of the Independent Learning Centre
