The last Day of Term 3 is a very special time for All Saints' College. The College community gathers in the Cathedral for the Benefactors' Service. Initially this occasion was to remember the founders and many contributors to All Saints' College since its inception in 1874.
The gathering has developed into a showcase and rite of passage. It is a time of praise and worship to God, and the people in our Music Department excell themselves in practising and leading exquisite pieces; it is a joy to hear them.
It is a time for the year 12's to be farewelled, and they enter the packed Cathedral led by the College flags. The Year 12s do a circuit of honour through the crowds, leaving the flags at the Altar.
The Prefects selected for the next year make their way down the main
aisle and sit in the front seats.
All the above takes place while the School Hymn, 'For All the Saints' ' is sung.
The Cathedral was presented by the Thompson family and the School Captains with a pair of Australian Flags from the First World War which are to be placed in the Warriors Chapel.
On this occasion the newly commissioned Assistant Bishop, The Right
Reverend John Stead was the preacher. Bishop John has had a background in Primary Education, and so has professional insights into education.
Five students offered their reflections on life in their Senior School years, and then members of staff shared their words of appreciation with the community. The
Prefects were commissioned, and they proudly wore their new red ties and prefect badges.
The Year 12s were presented with a lit candle and Bible. While they were standing around the Altar all the Junior School sang a blessing for them. It was very hard to keep a dry eye, and there were many Year 12 parents who were touched by this prayer to music; it was a reminder that their children are about to embark on a new chapter and adventure in life.
It is a privilege and delight to be part of this bonfire to God of Prayer, Praise, Finalities, Responsibilities and Beginnings. We were surrounded by colour, pageant, harmony, organ blasts, flames, divine words, the reversed thunder of prayer, one intent and a great cloud of witnesses.
