Our Philosophy

'History makes men wise.'

Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

'There is no right answer in history.'

Henry Ford (1863-1947)

Somewhere between these two attitudes lies the ASC philosophy to teaching History. We encourage the students to examine history with a critical eye, not to just accept the cart that is often presented as historical fact. History is bound to the complex behaviour of mankind and so can only be studied through a process of enquiry, analysis, deduction, extrapolation and speculation; it should never be rote learning and factual regurgitation. We use history to help us understand where we are today and how we got here. We don't teach students what to think; we use history to help students learn to think critically and independently.
