Gifted and Talented

The approach to working with Gifted/Talented students is based on a collaborative strategy. The Class teacher and the Coordinator of the Independent Learning Centre (encompassing Gifted Education) discuss individual students' requirements and strengths based on both formal and informal assessments, parent, staff and student self-referrals. From this, a plan is negotiated to best cater for that student. Where appropriate, the Learning Support teacher and the College Counsellor are also involved in designing strategies, especially when students are Gifted and Learning Disabled or require support in their social interactions.

Currently, students with gifts and talents are working through a range of different programs including; extension writing activities, regular problem-solving classes and small group workshops on problem solving, as well as the development of individualized learning programs. In some carefully assessed circumstances, vertical acceleration in specific subject areas has been facilitated. The school also has a policy of promoting differentiated programs and activities within all classrooms, to provide enrichment or support for the range of abilities and interests within any given class group. Opportunities to participate in competitions and additional creative activities is actively fostered.

Ongoing parent consultations with the Coordinator of the Independent Learning Centre are available on request and strongly encouraged as a means of the school gaining a better understanding of the student.
