The Infants department (Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2) stages a musical every second year, in which all students perform, and these fully costumed shows bring together the artistic, musical and dance talents of the younger students.

Every alternate year all of year 5 and 6 participate in the JSHAA Music Festival in Sydney. This is a joint festival including both individual items from each school and massed items including choir, concert band and string ensembles.

In the other year students have the opportunity to audition for the HICES 5-8 music festival, a fully auditioned music camp culminating in a grand concert usually held at the Sydney Town Hall.

Year 6 students have the opportunity to sit for a music scholarship into the senior school.

There are a number of opportunities for students to be involved in learning to play chess and participating in a variety of competitions.

The Junior School enters two teams in the local interschool competition organised by the NSW Chess League. Each team consists of four players and the competition is normally held during terms two and three. The winning team travels to Sydney for the finals in late November. On the intraschool level, the Junior School conducts its Chess Championships. The competition is for Junior (Years 3 and 4) and Senior students (Years 5 and 6) and usually involves separate competitions for boys and girls. Games are played during lunchtime on a knockout basis.

During the year, Friday is chess day and students are invited to learn how to play and to improve existing skills.Students are also invited to play in games on the outdoor board. In Year 5, a regular class competition is held each term, with games played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. This has proved invaluable in terms of developing problem-solving skills.
